Zonta to Award Scholarships for
Inland Seas
JANUARY 30, 2009(Midland, Michigan)
-- The Zonta Club of Midland is pleased to offer,
again this year, three full scholarships to attend the
“Young Women in Science” two-day course aboard the Schooner
Inland Seas. This opportunity is open to young women who
are Midland County residents and who are currently enrolled
in 9, 10, and 11th grade. The purpose of this
program is to provide unique learning opportunities for
young women who have an interest in environmental and
aquatic science. This experience will foster an increased
interest in science and a life-long commitment to Great
Lakes stewardship. During the course on June 16 and June
17, 2009, students will carry out research projects related
to the ecology of Lake Michigan.
Applicants should:

Be a female student currently in grades 9-11.
·
Have a strong interest in science as evidenced
by successful school experience in science classes.
·
Be willing to be an active participant in
hands-on learning.
·
Have previous outdoor education experience,
such as camping.
·
Have an interest or experience in sailing or
boating.
Integral with the science program is
the experience of shipboard life and demands of sailing a
traditionally rigged vessel. Students will learn boating
safety, navigation, and sailing theory and practice. Team
building techniques will promote the student’s ability to
work cooperatively.
To qualify, students must fill out an
application and write a half page essay on why they should
be chosen. A parent or guardian must sign the application
and the essay must fit into the space provided.
The scholarship winners will be asked
to write a short letter to the Zonta Club of Midland
describing their experience during the course. Applications
