42nd Homewalk Homes for 2023

For the second time, Kurt and Carol invite you to tour their amazing home, only this time the location is none other than their luxurious 3 bedroom 3.5 bathroom H Residence condominium downtown! After the flood, Kurt and Carol spent 2 years designing every square inch of their new home from the curly maple wood flooring often used to make guitars, to the elegant marble bathrooms, up to the exquisite light fixtures, and unique design of the transformational tray ceilings and molding throughout. Additional highlights of this masterpiece are the wine wall displaying their love for Napa Valley, the one-of-a-kind live edge dining table made of birds-eye elm, the centered two-sided fireplace, the most coveted chef’s table where beautiful flavors are prepared, and of course the panoramic views of downtown Midland from their curved living room with expansive windows and the only wrap around balcony in this signature 5-story urban residence. In the office, amongst Kurt’s love for cherry wood, a secret closet can be found behind his sister’s art pieces! The primary suite has a private balcony and marble ensuite with steam shower, and heated floors. Modern comfort continues as you tour the guest suite and powder room but don’t forget to see Brody’s own custom condo-in-a-condo! (woof!) You won’t want to leave before you venture to the 5th floor to enjoy the clubhouse area and spectacular rooftop air garden terrace featuring a large fireplace, outdoor kitchen, bar, seasonal seating for all, and Midland’s best view of 4th of July fireworks!

Originally the Earl Stein Residence, the Barkers are the third owners of this immaculately preserved Alden B Dow-designed historic work of art. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, this home is significant as the first designed through the Taliesin Fellowship established by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1933. As a house built for family and entertaining, it was the perfect home for Bill and Nancy with their 9 children, extended family and love of good company and good conversation. The bold lines and various textures instantly come to life as you enter the home. You will find yourself surrounded by Bill’s stunning collection of glass art as well as the many mementos of the family’s years of work and travels overseas. Thanks to the unexpected use of color and the imaginative holiday décor in every room, the home is warm and welcoming. Its day-to-day beauty lies in its notable details such as its copper roof, the massive brick fireplace with copper triangular patterned hood (illuminated through a window in the roof!), the use of unique Dow-created wall board made from pressed sugar cane, raised doorknobs, disappearing hinges, cypress wood built-ins, and the extensive use of mirrors to bring the outdoors in. Alden B. Dow’s profound creativity provides a brilliant canvas for the home the Barker family has loved and appreciated for the last 50 years.
