The Orange Ladies of Midland!
|
What are these orange dolls all about?
During the 16 Days of Activism from November 15 to December 10, many stores in Midland display orange lady dolls. These dolls are part of the Zonta Club of Midland’s campaign to end violence against women. The dolls, named Julie, help raise awareness for Zonta International’s project, "Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women." This project is part of the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism campaign to end gender-based violence. One in three women will experience gender-based violence in their lifetime. Zonta’s mission is to ensure that no woman lives in fear of violence. During the 16 Days of Activism, organizations and Zonta Clubs around the world raise awareness and encourage people to say NO to violence against women. Orange is the color of the campaign, and the dolls represent women who have been victims of violence. Why did Zonta Club of Midland choose the name “Julie” for their dolls? Julie’s aunt is a member of the Zonta Club of Midland and works to protect women and encourage men to say no to violence against women. Julie was 23 years old when she was attacked while riding her bike to a friend’s house in Belgium. She tried to fight off her attacker, but he overpowered her. He strangled her and threw her body into a canal, where it was found three days later. Her attacker was a serial rapist who had been released on parole and slipped through the cracks of the justice system. Julie’s family is working to change Belgium’s judicial system in her memory, so this does not happen to other women. Julie’s death is not in vain: her family and friends continue to advocate for ending gender-based violence. You can follow Julie’s story on Instagram @julie.vanespenslife.
