Homewalk

Since 1981 the annual Homewalk has been a holiday event and premier fundraiser for the Zonta Club of Midland. Each year a selection of area homes are superbly decorated for the holidays and opened up for public viewing. The club has collaborated with the Alden B. Dow Home and Studio to feature area architects and many of the mid-century modern homes in Midland. Over $521,000 has been raised by Homewalk to fund scholarships for women and grants for area non-profits.

806 West St. Andrews • Alden B. Dow Architect
Designed and built by Alden B. Dow in 1940, this modest single-story home pulls visitors in through the covered walkway that extends from the bold 54-inch front door toward the street. The mid-century design with its low hipped roof, strong horizontal plane, and tan brick walls visually anchors the house to the ground. In the spacious living room, wall-to-wall windows invite the outdoors in and compliment the natural oak flooring and red birch trim. Exposed brick and plaster walls are accented with a wood band running along the top, a feature repeated in the bedrooms. This unique Dow design places the bedrooms in the corners of the structure rather than grouped in zones. Compact in size and proportion, the home offers a cozy warmth and security for the homeowners.

300 Toboggan Run
Welcome to a one-of-a-kind lodge home nestled in the beauty of Midland’s very own City Forest. Built in 2009, your journey to this rustic ranch leads along a heated walkway to custom-crafted front doors from California. Once inside, grand windows overlook the lush City Forest where horses walk in the summer and cross-country skiers pass along groomed trails in the winter. Enjoy a glimpse of the nearby heated covered porch with deck featuring a stone fire pit and relaxing spa. The entry Lodge Room sets the rustic theme of solid wood arches, floors and doors, as well as stonework, repeated to striking effect throughout the home: in the kitchen with arches over the cedartoned granite island, in the master bath’s stone wall leading to an expansive shower, then reappearing in the lower level: custom stone wet bar with reclaimed barn wood shelves, a cozy home theatre between stone arches and graced with a custom wood
mantled fireplace made from the properties very own trees. There’s even a joyful children’s playroom and guest bedrooms for visitors. Ask your hostesses for more details on this warm and wonderful family retreat!

869 E. Shore Line Drive
Worth the drive! Built by R.E. Krotzer Construction in 2018, this unique home is a lesson in repurposing beautiful materials and a showplace for rescued artifacts. With the focus on comfortable spaces for a large blended family, the open, light-filled home features flexible seating and easy care finishes. The home looks down the longest natural canal on Wixom Lake, integrating the expansive waterside view with a cozy beach décor gone vintage industrial. From the exterior Hardie board siding to the concrete floors and counters, pallet wood feature wall, and wheeled, butcher block tables, all finishes were selected for their ageless beauty and practicality. Many furnishings and vintage treasures were collected from area antique festivals. Notice the collection of repurposed metal and wooden interior doors purchased along with half of the building materials at Habitat for Humanity ReStores.

2728 E. Blackhurst Road
This 3,000-sq. ft. contemporary home was designed by the owners in 2012 to blend the best of three favorite house plans. Notice the inventive blend of shake and vinyl siding, stacked stone, and wood accents as you approach the front door. Against a rustic feeling backdrop of exposed beam vaulted ceilings, wooden pillars, and stacked stone, the luxurious interior features and furnishings spotlight a collection of original artwork from local artists, including Michelle Courier and Steven Magstadt. Throughout the home, upscale appliances and furniture blend with collected items such as hand-knotted Pakistani rugs and an heirloom dining table in the family for generations. Be sure to see the master bath’s unique double walk-through shower and creative tilework. Catch the sweeping view from the oversized living room window which integrates the house with its beautiful, natural surroundings.

4210 Andre
The original owner of this lovely mid-century modern home designed interiors for Alden B. Dow. Today, the personal touches, family photos, and period furniture that have graced the home since its design, are lovingly maintained by the owners’ daughter, a collector of local and Michigan art. Designed and built in 1961 by Jack Feagley, the home features beautiful original finishes and fixtures in every room, from flooring and lighting to plumbing and tile, with hallmark edge-grained fir cabinetry and trim throughout. Special original touches like the raised hearth fireplace and concealed lighting as well as brick and vinyl floors added later create a beautiful, practical aesthetic. Rare for a home this age, the kitchen is completely original except for the replaced formica counters.
